Native hunters in the jungles of Africa have a clever way of trapping monkeys. They slice a coconut in two, hollow it out, and in one half of the shell cut a hole just big enough for a monkey’s hand to pass through. Then they place an orange in the other coconut half before fastening together the two halves of the coconut shell. Finally, they secure the coconut to a tree with a rope, retreat into the jungle, and wait. Sooner or later, an unsuspecting monkey swings by, smells the delicious orange, and discovers its location inside the coconut. The monkey then slips his hand through the small hole, grasps the orange, and tries to pull it through the hole. Of course, the orange won’t come out; it’s too big for the hole. To no avail the persistent monkey continues to pull and pull, never realizing the danger he is in. While the monkey struggles with the orange, the hunters simply stroll in and capture the monkey by throwing a net over him. As long as the monkey keeps his fist wrapped around the orange, the monkey is trapped. If only the monkey would let go of the orange, it could save its own life. It rarely occurs to the monkey, however, that it can’t have both the orange and its freedom. That delicious orange becomes a deadly trap. The world sets traps for you that are not unlike the monkey trap. You hear constantly that if you just have enough power, enough prestige-then you’ll be happy. Under that illusion people spend their whole lives trying to pull the orange out of the coconut. Don’t be trapped by thinking you must have it all. What the world offers appears delicious, but it eventually robs us of our freedom, our happiness, even our lives. Jesus said, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on
earth,
where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal, but
store up for yourselves treasures in Heaven." (Matt. 6:19-20). Jesus
also said, "What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet
forfeit his soul?"

This beautiful weather has us thinking of summer and the fun it brings including our own Ice Cream Festival. It will consist of much that we enjoyed last year and some new activities as well. Something to look forward to is the antique garden and farm show in the sanctuary which will have laundry and picnic items, too. Do you have old pictures of your farm or flower garden? Or maybe your family enjoying a picnic? We would appreciate having those to share, too. Have you seen God today? Remember the Sacred in Life picture gallery has plenty of room for all of your pictures. Have your camera ready to snap that perfect example of God in our everyday life. We will have a special section set aside for the pictures taken by children. Health Fair?!? Yes, we will have our nurses taking blood pressure, checking blood sugar levels and more. Tell your friends to set that day aside to join us for that. There is much more planned for that day. Mark your calendars for August 16 from 1-5:00 PM. Our parade will be bigger and there will be new activities added for the kids along with many of last year’s games. It will be a great day and will require many hands to make it a success. We’ll be starting to recruit soon so be thinking of where you would like to help. The committee’s excitement is building. We hope yours is too. |
UMW Mission Collection The UMW collection for May will go to the Guardian Angel Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to assist patientsand families in Hospice care with their non-medical needs. Your donations of new smoke detectors, baby monitors, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, and bath towels will be much appreciated. Thank you for your generosity!

From the
Mission Committee
House Sale ~ Mission Trip Fundraiser "Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock." Matthew 7:24-25 On June 29th, this church will send a team to West Virginia to share God’s love through the Joshua Home Repair Program at McDowell Mission. Through fresh paint or a new roof, God’s love will be demonstrated and His Word will be shared. We pray that those who hear, will listen and act to build their spiritual house on the rock, God’s word. You can help by purchasing a house to be displayed with your name on it for just $2. The Mission Committee will have houses for sale in the narthex on May 4th and 11th. We invite you to purchase a house for your family, for each individual in your family, in honor of someone special or in memory of a loved one.
McDowell Mission Work Camp Participants will
leave for
this work session after church on Sunday, June 29th and return Friday,
July 4th afternoon. Your $50 financial commitment is needed by May 25th
and will help to cover transportation, housing, food at the mission,
and supplies. Sign up sheet is on the Mission Table.
Again this year, we will be assembling school supply bags called YES kits for the children of Sierra Leone and Liberia. A list of the supplies is listed on the bulletin board. Please take a moment to look at what is needed and sign up to donate, so that a child will receive school supplies. If you sew, we are in need of a few more bags. The pattern is available. |
